The Eq.uat.ion: “Traditional Meets Urban” Monthly Dance workshops.

Since 2012, Batalo East has been at the forefront of a unique initiative that marries the rich traditional dances of Uganda with contemporary urban dance styles. The Equation, a monthly dance workshop, has grown from its humble beginnings at the National Theatre CICP Space in Kampala to a nationwide movement, leaving an indelible impact on the Ugandan dance community.

A Decade of Cultural Fusion: The Equation workshops began with a simple yet powerful mission: to bring together qualified traditional dance teachers and skilled urban dance artists to share their expertise with participants. Over the years, the workshops have evolved into a dynamic platform where contemporary techniques and traditional rhythms intertwine, creating a new, vibrant dance culture in Uganda.

Held every last Saturday of the month from 2010, these workshops have consistently drawn large crowds, with over 150 participants each month. The sessions were not just about dance; they were immersive experiences featuring dance cyphers, screenings, dance labs, and dance jams, fostering a deep appreciation for both traditional and modern dance forms.

Taking The Equation to the Regions

In 2024, recognizing the profound impact of The Equation, Batalo East decided to extend its reach beyond Kampala. The initiative now travels to different regions where participants, inspired by their experiences at The Equation, have established their own dance organizations. This year alone, The Equation has brought its transformative power to four regions: Mbale, Butaleja, Jinja, and Kampala.

April 28th – Mbale District: Hosted by Dream House Uganda and led by Alan, this workshop featured the Kadodi traditional dance, led by Wamundu Albashir from Infiniti Tapaa Uganda, and a breakdance session led by Pokeedy from Dream House Uganda.

May 25th – Butaleja District: The Batalo East Creative Center hosted this session, featuring the Amabega dance led by Aziza Nyomerwa, a long-time participant in the Kuhamahama Arts Movement, and Dancehall led by Cool Zaga dance crew.

June 22nd – Kampala: Hosted at Mind Leaps Buyaya Technical Service Building in Katwe, this workshop showcased Ding Ding, led by Kyeyune Francis, and Fusion urban dance, led by Dumba Abdulbast.

Impact and Future Prospects:  The expansion of The Equation has not only preserved Uganda’s traditional dance heritage but has also empowered youth across the country to establish their own dance spaces. These workshops have become a breeding ground for creativity, innovation, and community building.

As The Equation continues to travel to new regions, it promises to inspire more young people to embrace their cultural roots while exploring the possibilities of urban dance.
