The Equation is a distinctive dance workshop series organized by Batalo East, focusing on blending traditional Ugandan dances with urban dance styles. Each month, qualified traditional dance teachers and instrumentalists introduce a different Ugandan cultural dance, while a skilled urban dancer guides participants in learning and applying contemporary techniques. These workshops target the urban dance community and are open to all dancers and interested members of the public, especially youth.
Held from 3:00 to 5:30 PM, the workshops provide an opportunity for participants to apply new styles and skills in a traditional dance circle or ‘cypher.’ The Equation includes the following components:
-Traditional/Urban Jam: Afro-fusion music sessions where participants can explore and experiment individually and within a dance circle.
– Dance Discussion and Screening: Post-workshop dialogues and clip screenings led by invited dancers from Uganda or abroad, discussing the merging of traditional and urban dance, techniques, and personal and professional experiences.
From 2012 to 2020, The Equation was held at the CICP space in the Uganda National Theatre, Kampala, on the last Saturday of every month. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the workshops are now held at the Batalo East Creative Center in Butaleja and rotate among different local dance organizations in regions such as Kampala, Mbale, and Jinja.
Participants are required to bring clean footwear, comfortable clothing, and a bottle of water. Stay updated about The Equation and other Batalo East events on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook.
